Internet Exchange Point (IXP) Workshop

Inspired by the desire to improve local interconnectivity, improve the efficiency of operations and communications amongst members and to ensure that local traffic remains local, the Internet Service Provider Association of Nigeria (ISPAN) is organising a 3-day workshop from Tuesday 24 June to Thursday 26 June, as part of the effort to sensitize the IT community about the need for the establishment of an interconnection point for traffic exchange amongst network operators.

The Internet Service Provider's Association (ISPAN) with the support of the French Embassy in Nigeria, is organising a 3-day workshop from Tuesday 24th of June to Thursday the 26th of June, as part of the effort to sensitize the IT community about the need for the establishment of an interconnection point for the exchange of local internet traffic amongst network operators in Nigeria.

*       Who should attend

The target audience includes individuals in the ISP community, network service providers, who posses a basic understanding of Cisco Systems equipment, engineers who are now or will soon be building or operating a wide area TCP/IP based Internet Service Provider (ISP) network with international and/or multi-provider connectivity.

Prerequisites include basic knowledge of the fundamentals of the operation of routers, user level UNIX, system administration and TCP/IP network design.

Preference for this course will be given to those individuals who come from ISPs that are either registered or prospective ISPAN members and/or ISPs that are operational.

Due to the limited number of spaces available, participants in the tutorial will be selected on a first come, first served basis, with not more than two participants being allowed per company.

*       Workshop scope

  • Techniques for the design, set-up and operation of a metropolitan, regional or national Internet Exchange Point using BGP4 protocol
  • BGP best practices, route aggregation, receiving and injecting prefixes into iBGP.
  • Techniques for multiple connections to the Internet (multihoming), including connections to Internet Exchange Points, NSP and other Internet links.
  • Techniques to achieve optimal configuration and performance from a Cisco backbone router. This includes routing scalability, network design and configuration techniques.
  • Internet Exchange Point implementation design as well as case studies of successful Internet Exchange Points the world over.

The venue for the workshop is at The Golden Gate Restaurant, Kingsway Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. Successful applicants will be notified of acceptance, and confirmation of a place as soon as payment is made.

  • The deadline for applications is Monday, the 16th of June 2003.

  • Selections and notifications will be sent out by Wednesday, the 18th of June 2003.

  • Payment deadline is Friday, the 20th of June 2003.

*       Workshop Costs

The workshop is being provided at a cost price of N50, 000 per head. This fee covers workshop materials, tea/coffee break and lunch for the duration of the programme. Please kindly note that participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

Payment details will be provided to successful applicants when they are notified.

Please kindly note that successful participants must notify ISPAN of payment by showing proof of such, latest by 12noon on Monday, the 23rd of June 2003.
